Actress, Eleanor Handley
burns up the stage as Maggie
in Cat on a Hot Tin Roof

WHO IS THIS COOL PEEP: ELEANOR HANDLEY
Originally from Melbourne, Australia, I moved to NYC in 2005 after receiving a scholarship for the MFA program at the New School for Drama in the West Village. Since graduating I’ve had the chance to perform all over the east coast, including premiering a Chuck Mee play off-Broadway  opposite Austin Pendleton and appearing in ‘A Christmas Carol’ at the Morgan Library with Dominic Chianese (AKA Uncle Jnr from the Sopranos)Other favorite stage performances include Cressida in the New York Times acclaimed production of Troilus and Cressida for the Hudson Valley Shakespeare Festival and most recently ‘Maggie’ in Cat on a Hot Tin Roof at the The Pennsylvania Shakespeare Festival…(where I had the pleasure of meeting the illustrious CC).  On TV you may have seen me in Royal Pains and As the World Turns.

WHAT ARE A FEW OF HER FAVOURITE THINGS (spelled the Aussie way):
1. The sound of the first pour from a great bottle of wine…and then drinking it with wonderful friends.

2. TRAVEL!!!! To relax…. Tulum, Mexico. The magic of the Mayans can still be felt.  Specifically check out Cabanas La Luna. Best spot on the beach. And next, I’m dying to check out Hacienda Petac, not far out of Merida.

To feel glam and close-ish to Australia, without crossing the planet,  I jump the pond and visit my brother in Notting Hill.

When home in Australia, my #1 relaxation spot is the new family adventure WhitesBeach in Torquay, Victoria - private, quiet, and stunningly breathtaking.

(Note: all of 2. usually involve 1.)

(Note from CC: can I come? Please? Like NOW?)

WHAT IS ON HER WISH LIST:
Years ago my wonderful friend Kate (a brilliant novelist), read in Vogue about a ‘Cabernet Sauvignon Scrub’ spa service somewhere in the swanky South of France. To this day that’s how we measure our success trajectory; we’ll know we’ve made it when we book  our ‘Cab Sav Scrub’. We are close… I can taste it.

WHAT IS ELEANOR’S FAVORITE HAUNT:
Cafe Reggio.  To this perennial tourist it is the quintessential Greenwich Village…It’s Bob Dylan’s NYC. The sort of place where people sit for hours by themselves, drinking cappuccino and writing poetry on napkins.

WHAT IS PLAYING ON HER iPOD, RIGHT NOW?
iPod is stuck on my recently purchased list, which means tons of Mumford and Sons and Adele…. And also means I’m overdue for a new purchase. Kindly forward me any musical selections you think I might like.

I also have Reserved for Rondee on loop – bass player, Tom Degnan played opposite me as ‘Brick’ in Cat on a Hot Tin Roof this past summer – huge fan of all his work – both musical and theatrical!

WHAT HANDBAG ARE YOU CARRYING AND WHAT IS IN IT – RIGHT NOW?
Cream Coach handbag… or at least mostly cream. NYC is rough on lighter shades. As for what’s in it -  what isn’t in it? I have officially become a bit like Mary Poppins and her magic carpet-bag. I wouldn’t be surprised if a lampshade and a coat rack spontaneously fell out of it.

WHAT SONG PLAYS WHEN YOU WALK INTO A ROOM?
At this time of year? Here Comes the Sun. Please!!!!!!

WHERE CAN WE FIND YOU NEXT?
In April, I start rehearsals for Hudson Valley Shakespeare Festival, where I can be seen Memorial Day through Labor Day as ‘Regan’ in King Lear and ‘Milady’ inThree Musketeers.

Next week, you can find me at Under St. Mark’s in the East Village, where I’ll be wearing my “Producer’s hat”  at the much-anticipated opening of The Dork Knight with Jason O’Connell - the incredibly hilarious and moving story of one man’s obsession with all things Batman. Get your ticket now, we are almost sold out (Show runs 3/19-23/2013).

Note from C: She truly does “handle” it all, be it on stage trumping all performances of ‘Maggie’ to-date (including the late Elizabeth Taylor and Scarlett Johansson), or producing one of the funniest shows I have ever seen in the East Village, Ms. Handley continues to keep me awestruck in all the work she lays her hands upon…in short, she has the Midas touch.

handley_eleanor4879RTPeople always talk about how ‘hard’ it is to work in the theater. All the uncertainty, the rejection, not knowing where your next paycheck is coming from…  And of course it’s all true. But it leaves out one part; it’s also the greatest job in the world. As an actor, you get to have many lives in one life…. and that… well that’s almost as intoxicating as that great glass of wineEleanor Handley

With inspiration that draws from “…classic artists like Led Zeppelin, the Beatles, U2 and contemporary artists like the White Stripes, the Black Keys and Arcade Fire, Reserved for Rondee blends imagination and style into a mystic rock journey”.  Aside from that – this is a group of genuinely cool, down-to-Earth,and multi-dimensional men…(who also happen to be ridiculously talented and witty – charmed ones for sure).  And as they hit the studio this month to begin recording their first full length album (“epic” is the word I kept hearing) – these five extroverted musicians kindly put aside a few hours to chat with me. Yes, I am a very lucky gal.

TD: Playing the game of Life (like the board game, I’m seriously going to play it) and hopefully a vacation to Cape Cod in the spring.
TV:I have a wicked cool family & stoked bout going on vacation to Florida & Portugal with them this Summer.
WH: Time to go to Brazil…it’s the new Vegas.
NF: I’m currently finishing up the script to a feature-length movie titled “Turning Two,” the real life story of legendary 1970′s Mets double play combo second baseman Felix Millan and shortstop Buddy Harrelson. It’s both a period piece set in the gritty NYC of the 70s and a buddy movie that chronicles the on and off the field relationship of these two beloved athletes whose backgrounds couldn’t have been more different and whose time together was cut short due to a tragic injury suffered in an on-field brawl. Grab your popcorn and a box of Kleenex… it’s gonna make Field of Dreams and A River Runs Through It look like cold, emotionless, run of the mill Hollywood fare.

REVIEW: Cat on a Hot Tin Roof – The Roof is on Fire…

28 Jul Look What I Found Header 2

By Christabelle…@CBellesCloset

As a New Yorker, I often consider myself to be a bit of a jaded judge when it comes to, well, everything.  I have dined at the top restaurants, shopped at the best stores, and have had the privilege of sitting through some of the most impeccably produced Broadway and Off-Broadway performances. So, when I was prompted to drive to DeSales University (in of all places, Center Valley, PA) to see a production of Cat on a Hot Tin Roof at The Pennsylvania Shakespeare Festival, I left my expectations in Manhattan and drove to what I thought would be a quick night at the theatre. And nothing more than that.

Degnan (L) and Handley (R) play Brick and Maggie Pollitt in The Pennsylvania Shakespeare Festival’s  production of Cat on a Hot Tin Roof.

Dear readers, I am happy to report that I was wrong. Dead wrong.  My evening was ANYTHING but a quick night at the theatre.  Director Thomas Ouellette, has led a team of uber-talented actors to the stage in a moving, deeply dark rendition of Cat on a Hot Tin Roof by Tennessee Williams.  This is an astounding production that I am confident Williams himself gave a standing ovation to, from the heavens above.

Eleanor Handley takes the role of Maggie and owns it. I mean, she really owns it.  Most often played with child-like immaturity, Handley takes Maggie past puberty and morphs her into a scintillating, southern woman. Strong and defined; manipulative just to the teetering point of despising her and then coming through with a human side, that was not only moving, but made her real and relatable. Her performance was robust and an absolute delight to watch. She gracefully moved her character and the story-line forward with every sexually infused, sashayed step she took in her stunning red ensemble (which was beautifully costumed by Lisa Zinni). Handley created a flawless foundation for this production of Cat. She no doubt has allured audiences in the past and will continue to do so in her future theatre endeavors.

Tom Degnan’s performance was nothing less than brilliant as Brick Pollitt.  He transformed this drunken, disconnected, shell-of-a-man into someone you actually felt sympathy and empathy for. Instead of hating his indifference and loathing of the world and everyone in it, he made me want to crawl into the bottom of the whiskey bottle with him and dig deep into his neurosis and psychosis. Seamlessly played, Degnan’s rendition of “ex-football star” Brick was moving and touched me in a way few actors have been able to do. He hit my reality button and made me believe he truly was this tortured and despondent man. His callous and detached silence at times proved to speak louder than the words he delivered in voice.  Degnan’s portrayal of Brick’s listlessness and negligence toward himself and the relationships around him (including the bottle), kept me hanging onto every crutched stumble he made across the stage. Tom Degnan pours life into a seemingly dead character. Having personally dealt with someone who struggled with substance abuse, he brought the demons of this man to such a real and poignantly truthful place, there were moments my eyes welled watching him struggle against himself. Degnan, a former daytime television star, should at this juncture in his career remain famous for one and only role thus far and that is of his interpretation and phenomenal delivery of Brick Pollitt.  He has set the bar very high for future “Bricks” and has left behind shoes that will be virtually impossible to fill going forward.

This production is a pool of talent with a bevy of notable performances including Joe Vincent as Big Daddy, and Jo Twiss as Big Mama. Carey Van Driest and Rob Kahn as Mae Flynn and Gooper, and Anthony Reimer and Larry Bull as Reverend Tooker and Doctor Baugh, respectively. Even the Pollitt children were delightfully obnoxious!

Cat on a Hot Tin Roof transports the audience to a hot, muggy plantation in the 1950’s and slowly pulls them into the somber and murky world of the wealthy, southern Pollitt family.  Topics carry over time and space and were tangible to every person who owned a seat in that theater — cancer, substance abuse, death, marital issues, greed, fall from grace. And  just when the mood on stage became suffocating in humidity and darkness, a “comic relief” was issued to the audience providing not an awkward laugh but one that was poised and perfectly timed. Bravo, Mr. Ouellette, for a beautifully directed performance. I take my hat off to you.

My only regret is that the Shakespeare Festival is at the end of its run and I am unable to return to Center Valley, PA and catch more performances (Much Ado About Nothing, Sweeney Todd and The Tempest – to name a few).

The curtain falls on August 5th, 2012. I cannot encourage you enough to make the trip to The Pennsylvania Shakespeare Festival and catch what I am going to call the BEST rendition of Cat on a Hot Tin Roof I have ever had the honor of watching.

Tickets are available at www.pashakespeare.org and by contacting the Box Office at 610.282.WILL [9455]

My recommendation for local lodging is the stunningly, beautiful Victorian bed and breakfast – The Sayre Mansion.  The accommodations are impeccable and it is just a short 15 minute drive from Historic Bethlehem, PA to the DeSales campus.

xo, christabelle

NYC Indie Rock Band, Reserved for Rondee: (l-r) Fokas, Hemenway, Degnan, Magnussen and Vaughn (front)

What do you get when you mix 5 New York City men, a roomful of instruments, a distinctly unique sound, a passion for music and, oh, did I mention five very handsome men already? What you have is the Manhattan based indie band Reserved for Rondee…an exhilarating rock-melodic treat for your soul. If you are looking for the hottest addition to the NYC music scene – look no further.

Reserved for Rondee is quickly rising the ranks as of one of New York City’s most beloved emerging bands…selling out at venues like the Lower East Side’s famed Arlene’s Grocery and Mercury Lounge. And though they might be sophomore in their number of years as a “band”, there is nothing juvenile about the sound they produce when they take to the stage. With inspiration that draws from “…classic artists like Led Zeppelin, the Beatles, U2 and contemporary artists like the White Stripes, the Black Keys and Arcade Fire, Reserved for Rondee blends imagination and style into a mystic rock journey”.  And they deliver on that…and then some.

Comprised of soap opera vets, guitarist Billy Magnussen and bassist Tom Degnan (whom you no doubt eyed on As the World Turns and One Life to Live), front man Trevor Vaughn, guitarist Nick Fokas and drummer Warren Hemenway – this group of artists is just as diverse as the music that emanates from deep within them. RFR delivers a variety of tunes, drenched in emotion and passion, wrapped up with a bow in a theatrical attention-getting performance; one that keeps you transfixed for the entire set.  The only complaint from the fans (including me!) – we want MORE.

Now you can help Reserved for Rondee  expand their musical portfolio by pledging to their “Kickstarter” fundraising platform. Pledge one dollar or one thousand, but help them meet their financial goal by May 25, 2012, so they kick it in the studio and keep the music alive for us all to enjoy…and in my case do a little more “Jersey headbanging” to.
