Wilderness Rocks
Fun adventures in the Catskills

I love shoes (you all already know this about me).  I even like THESE kinds of shoes – snowshoes (yes, you heard me right).

If you are looking for something new, different and fun to do this winter (with your gang or just your POC Partner in Crime), I found a great, economic getaway that is not only FUN, but a good workout. They have a delicious menu of outings available (does a Winter Hike and Winery Adventure or Campfires, Hot Cocoa…and Sauna sound yum-yum to you…yeah, me too!).

See you in the wilderness (I will be the cute brunette wearing red-bottom snowshoes…it could happen!).

Winter Hike and Winery Adventure with Wilderness Rocks (Catskills, NY)
Dust off your boots, slip on your gloves and don your hat for this winter hike in the woods and afternoon at a winery. Enjoy the sharp, chill, crisp air on this moderate day hike that will get your heart pumping—after all, that’s the best way to stay warm on a cold day! And if there is snow then we will tromp down the trail in snowshoes and enjoy a snowy hike.

Imagine swapping skyscrapers for towering pines. Trading stale subway air for an alpine breeze. Replacing honking horns with a crackling wood fire. City life is amazing, but sometimes we all need to get back in touch with nature—Wilderness Rocks gets you there.

Led by two intrepid adventurers (and their friendly pooch), Wilderness Rocks is all about appreciating the great outdoors. Whether you’re enjoying the idyllic beauty of a frozen waterfall or learning the art of snowshoeing through the forest, these guides create a fun, interactive experience for the entire group.

27 East – Straight to Paradise…

23 May

By Christabelle…@CBellesCloset

MONTACO’S – the signature dish of 668 The Gig Shack:
House made tortilla, crisp red slaw, blackend local catch of the day and sweet mango salsa.

The time has come…summer Friday’s have officially begun…and the air is starting to smell beachy (or in the case of NYC, sometimes like rotting garbage in the sun…) but nonetheless all signs that summer has arrived.  If you know me well (and since I have been blogging here for 100 years, YOU SHOULD)…I wait with bated breath every year for this weekend to arrive – for the summer season to “officially begin” and I can make my way to 27E which drops me off in my little slice of heaven…Montauk.

First stop when I get into town…where else? 668 The Gig Shack. I am going to swing by and say hello to the always amazing and never less than fabulous Gardell family (I heart you all!). Have me a Blue Moon Beer with a slice of orange, a Montaco (if you haven’t had one, you have yet to live life), and let my summer unfold in front of me.

Navy Beach at Fort Pond Bay in Montauk
(Photo Rights: Navy Beach Restaurant)

Next stop…catch another cocktail and watch the sun set into Fort Pond Bay (just steps away from my own place) – Navy Beach. With cushy outdoor white couches, ocean blue umbrellas and yachts pulling up close to shore, this place feels more like Santorini than Montauk.  And if the wonderful food, drink and atmosphere at Navy Beach just isn’t enough for you, wait for the mind-blowing sunset into the water – and that is FREE of charge.

Dinner, you ask? I have been waiting for almost a year to chow down on The Harvest’s famed Calamari Salad with Red Pepper Vinaigrette with some Garlic Mashed Potatoes on the side. Ok, ok…I know that doesn’t sound like the classiest of “pairings” but I don’t care. I salivate all year waiting to eat both…so deal. If you come to the Harvest on Fort Pond – come hungry! The portions are family style and they are deliciously generous!

Meet me out, won’t you? Bon Appetit, Montauk!

Qua Baths & Spa at Caesars

Just in time for spring, Qua Baths & Spa at Caesars Palace has added four organic spa treatments to its menu. These fresh new treatments are designed to firm, refresh and brighten skin using all-natural products and ingredients. Guests will be able to enjoy these eco-friendly treatments as a permanent part of the menu beginning March 9.

Tea & Sea Organic Body Scrub (50-minutes; $150)

Using powerful antioxidants, vitamins and minerals derived from organic white tea leaves and seaweed, the Tea & Sea Organic Body Scrub begins with a delicate citrus-kombucha tea body wash followed by an almond-orange fruit and nut scrub to cleanse and exfoliate the skin. Vichy shower streams warmed to perfection heat the body, while a scented coconut argan oil scalp massage is performed. Applied to warm, polished skin, the final application of body butter, containing grape stem cell, white tea and seaweed, melts in to the skin leaving it radiant and silky smooth.

Anti-Cellulite & Body Firming Wrap (50-minutes; $180)

Designed to tighten and firm the body using nature’s super-rich defense compounds found in coffee berries, this body wrap will enhance the appearance of skin’s texture with a combination of enzymes and formulated body-shaping complex. While skin is nourished and polished using all natural ingredients, a relaxing scalp and slimming massage will aid in stress-relief and detoxification transpiring a confident new radiance.

CoffeeBerry® Yoga Facial (50-minutes; $200)

The relaxing, anti-aging CoffeeBerry Yoga Facial is designed to improve areas that show the most signs of aging: face, neck, décolletage and hands. This all-natural, results-oriented treatment will reduce tension and stress levels as well as brighten and even overall skin tone. The synergetic effects of detoxification, massage, lifting techniques and increased circulation will leave the skin with a natural lift and smoother lines.

Qua Mystic Journey (75-minutes; $300)

This astonishing body and facial ritual combines the most lavish experiences beginning with a warm coconut argan oil application along the spine followed by a ginger lime sugar scrub. A soothing, organic body oil is applied before being gently wrapped in a blanket of warm towels during a stimulating scalp massage and restorative facial to stimulate the essential functions of the skin and aid in the repair of cell damage.

Unplug, Breathe Deep, and Get Real…

12 Apr

By Christabelle…

Spring is upon us – it’s time to get off the couch and into the fresh air!  With its magnificent climate, diverse geography and family-friendly vibe, Wine Coast Country is the perfect West Coast destination for an outdoor “reboot.”  Need a little adventure, meaning, and balance to your sluggish of sedentary lifestyles…read on!

Instead of sitting in traffic…why not take the long way?

Those who enjoy revving their engines under the sun will love off-roading at the Oceano Dunes State Recreation Area – the only California state park that allows vehicles to drive on the beach.  For visitors longing to kayak in tranquility, Lopez Lake in Arroyo Grande and the protected waters off Olde Port Beach in Avila Beach are terrific destinations.  Or, if you prefer to travel more simply – on foot – the Central Coast hosts dozens of charity walks and races throughout the spring, welcoming everyone from weekend warriors to Ironman triathletes.  For a gorgeous 10K from Morro Rock to Cayucos Pier that benefits a good cause, check out the Miracle Miles for Kids event hosted by Family Care Network every May.

Instead of channel-surfing…try surfing the mighty Pacific.

Wine Coast Country hosts some of the most beloved surf spots in all of California.  Take in the sunset and swells at famous surf spot Pico Creek in San Simeon, or hang ten in classic California style at Sand Spit in Los Osos.  Your first time?  Try a surf school like Cayucos Surf Company, which offers group and private lessons for the young and the young-at-heart.  Up and down the Central Coast, everyone from the little grom to the big kahuna will find their perfect wave.  So grab your neoprene and your board – surf’s up!

Instead of word processing…why not process your thoughts?

Nothing clears the mind like a long hike.  And when it comes to good hikes, from tiny trails off the beaten path to popular walks for the whole family, nothing beats Wine Coast Country.  For a tramp over creeks, a lake, sand dunes, and an unspoiled stretch of coastline, the Guadalupe-Nipomo Dunes Center is just the thing. Or take Fido out for a stroll on the Bob Jones Bike Trail in Avila Beach.  This 1.5-mile paved path is canopied in regal sycamores and oaks, and accommodates everyone from kids on tricycles to dog-walkers.  Or, for the ultimate in secluded take-your-breath-away beauty, try Montaña de Oro State Park near Los Osos.  The park’s name, translated “Mountain of Gold,” finds its origins in the golden wildflowers that bloom every spring. Bring a picnic, work up a sweat, and then relax among the wildflowers.

Instead of eating out…try eating way out.

Wine Coast Country’s fertile soils and temperate climate nurture hundreds of acres of abundant farm land.  Many ranches welcome visitors for tours and picnics,  including avocado farms like Morro Creek Ranch outside Morro Bay, olive oil producers like Tiber Canyon Ranch in Price Canyon, and any one of the myriad world-renowned wineries across the Central Coast.  Or if you’re in the mood for seafood, stop by the Morro Bay Oyster Company or The Abalone Farm in Cayucos for a tour and a taste of the freshest shellfish around.

Instead of playing video games…try playing on the wild side.

While the Central Coast certainly attracts the attention of hundreds of thousands of people annually, it’s an even greater destination for migratory wildlife.  Beginning in April, humpback whales make their way to the coast to feed throughout the summer.  Several coastal towns host whale-watching tours, including Avila Beach, Morro Bay, and San Simeon.  Or for those with an interest in lepidopterology (the study of butterflies), a visit to the Monarch Butterfly Grove in Pismo Beach is in order, with an average of 25,000 Monarchs covering the eucalyptus forest during high season.  And better than any soap opera is San Simeon’s Elephant Seal Rookery during mating season.  Along a short stretch of windswept coastline, this free, natural entertainment includes male elephant seals fighting and bellowing for dominance, pups squawking to be fed, and females defending their young…all in the open air.

Instead of endless cell phone calls…why not hang up and thrive?

In this era of breakneck technological advancement, it feels good to power-down the cell phone and make a face-to-face connection.  And with its year-round mild weather, Wine Coast Country excels at building community out-of-doors, with at least one farmers’ market every day of the week, pedestrian-friendly bustling city centers, and plenty of al fresco entertainment.  Pick up fresh, in-season produce and shake the hand that feeds you at the Avila Beach fish and farmers’ market every Friday.  Enjoy coffee, baked delights, and conversation on the patio of one of Cambria’s sidewalk cafes on a sunny spring day.  Or just lay down a blanket at Edna Valley Vineyards, grab a bottle of fine wine and soak up the live music every Friday night in June.

When it comes to accommodations that make the most of the outdoors, Wine Coast Country has it covered, from cozy to classy.  Try an oceanfront vacation rental for the weekend or the month that allows your family to come and go as you please, spread out, and cook in your own kitchen.  Or take your beloved to the quaint Victoria’s Last Resort bed and breakfast in Cambria, which features fantastic views, complete privacy, and luxurious private gardens; or one of Cambria’s Moonstone Beach hotels fronting the boardwalk along the beach.  Of course, if luxury is your thing, you could always stay at a deluxe beachfront hotel like Avila Beach Lighthouse Suites or On The Beach Bed & Breakfast in Cayucos.  Wherever you stay, this much is certain: You will find yourself falling in love with the Wine Coast Country lifestyle.

About Wine Coast Country

Wine Coast Country represents the San Luis Obispo County Business Improvement District, whose mission is to promote increased occupancy in the 730+ lodging properties that are a part of the CBID constituency. www.WineCoastCountry.com promotes tourism to San Luis Obispo County’s distinct unincorporated areas, including Avila Beach, Cambria, Cayucos, Los Osos, Nipomo, Oceano, San Simeon, and unincorporated San Luis Obispo, Arroyo Grande, and Morro Bay.  For more information check out www.WineCoastCountry.com.

Costa Rican Hotel Shows Jungle Love…

7 Apr

By Christabelle…

Lace up those sneakers and head down to Costa Rica for the third-annual Lapathon Jungle Run, a fundraising event that supports the needs of local schools in the Osa Peninsula.

As a project of the highly-sustainable Lapa Rios Rainforest Ecolodge, this year’s 18-km run is limited to 300 participants and will take place on May 1, 2011 in Costa Rica’s Osa Peninsula. Cost to register is $20, with all funds raised going to fulfill infrastructure needs of local schools. Winners (first to finish and most pledges earned) will receive free nights and meals at one of the six Earth-friendly Cayuga Sustainable Hospitality resorts in Costa Rica and Nicaragua.

“This is the third time we’ve held this wildly-successful event,” said Hans Pfister, CEO and principle of Cayuga Sustainable Hospitality. “In 2009, funds raised went towards equipping the region’s only ambulance with supplies and, in 2010, we helped to build a classroom for children with learning disabilities. All our resorts participate in programs like the Lapathon to help our environment, community and people – we like to think we’re doing our bit to make our corner of the Earth just a little better.”

Created in the ’90s under the philosophy that “a rainforest left standing was worth more than cut down,” Lapa Rios is set on a private nature reserve, spread over 1,000-acres of Central America’s last remaining lowland tropical rainforest. Over the years, Lapa Rios has been recognized for its Earth-saving ways by Condé Nast Traveler, Travel + Leisure, TripAdvisor, National Geographic and many more.

To sign up for the third-annual Lapathon Jungle Run, visit http://www.laparios.com/lapathon

Another major May initiative for Lapa Rios is the 2011 Wildcat Research and Conservation Experience – a package that allows guests the opportunity to get involved with jaguar, puma and wildcat conservation efforts. The experience is available year-round (based on researcher availability) and, during the low season (May 1 – Oct. 31, 2011), starts at $270 USD per person per night (based on double occupancy) to $370 USD per person per night (based on single occupancy). Package highlights include:

  • Setting up and checking heat sensor triggered cameras in the Lapa Rios wildlife reserve, cameras used to monitor the movement of jaguar, puma and other wildlife in the reserve and the Osa Peninsula.
  • Hiking into the rainforest and helping to collect wildcat footprints in the rainforest.
  • Learning how to conduct an analysis of the wild cats’ diets in the rainforest.
  • Working alongside locals – some used to be hunters but are not actively involved in the conservation of the wildlife, flora and fauna of the Osa Peninsula.
  • Participating in talks given at local schools, community groups and hotels about the wildlife conservation program.
  • Setting up and testing a program that monitors the movement of peccaries (medium sized, wild pig-like mammals) with the help of GPS collars.

Special rates and promotions at Lapa Rios:

April 25 – Aug. 25, 2011: buy a Lapa Rios or family package and get an additional night for free; buy five nights and pay for only four.

June 15 – Sept. 15, 2011: kids stay and eat free.

Aug. 26 – Nov. 20, 2011: buy three nights and pay for only two.

April 25 – Nov. 20, 2011: book a honeymoon package and get an extra night for free.

A Cool Factor in Midtown NYC…Andaz 5th Avenue Bar

22 Mar

By Christabelle…

When I think of 5th Avenue in midtown, I think of shopping, the diamond district, Rockefeller Center and tourists. I don’t think – killer location to hang out and have drinks and dinner. Let me stand corrected. For I stumbled across a cellar bar that not only has the “cool” factor of a downtown lounge with amazing cuisine, but an attentive staff and a crowd that is more than pleasing to the eye.

The Bar at Andaz 5th Avenue

Upon entering the Andaz 5th Avenue Hotel, I felt a tiny bit like I was on a secret mission. The doors looked as though they were quite supposed to open and the long staircase down to “the bar” didn’t openly cry out HERE I AM. I like that.  I thought for a moment I was going to need a secret knock, password and handshake to enter the premises.  Not the case and for as posh as it looks, “the bar” is actually has classy, laid back ambiance.

The Andaz 5th Avenue bar serves small-batch liquors and a carefully curated selection of wines by the glass. Bar staff is comprised of individuals with a natural ability to play the bon vivant host as well as appreciate the shape of a single rough-hewn, hand cut ice cube in traditional whisky service. Two oversized, 14-foot Claro Walnut wood slabs serve as the stations helmed by the expert bartenders serving beer, wine, and delicious handcrafted cocktails.

An open kitchen serves small sharing plates and allows guests to be part of the action as they engage and socialize with the bar’s chefs. Featuring fresh, seasonal ingredients from local farms such as Bo-Bo’s Farms Organic Chicken, Meili Farms, Niman Ranch and Steve Connelly’s Dayboat; the bar gives guests a unique culinary experience. Signature dishes created by Executive Chef Roberto Alicea include Stuffed Peppers with Chicken, Olive Oil and Cilantro; Shrimp a la Plancha with Garlic, Lemon Peel, Peppers and Herbs; and Roasted Pork Shoulder with Black Kale, Raisins and Orange Peel.  An assortment of locally sourced cheeses and homemade ice creams are also available.

Convivial, social spaces for cocktails and conversations come in many forms at the Andaz cellar bar. Guests can choose to gather on the warm, comfortable, pin-tucked, amber couch near the candle-lit mock fire.  Alternatively, two 120-year old gigantic cuts of Claro wood act as a sturdy bar where cocktail connoisseurs can be close to the culinary and cocktail action. In addition to the genial space located near the bar and kitchen, guests can find plenty of nooks for quiet conversation in banquette seating that lines the bar.  The most unique space to enjoy the bar’s cocktails and cuisine is at one of the six centrally located communal dark wood tables.  An evening that starts with just two can turn into a memorable night with many new friends.

A “no reservations” policy underscores the unfussy philosophy, allowing a quick handcrafted cocktail to turn into a full tête-à-tête over a shared late-night dinner.  To provide an atmosphere that is comfortable and enjoyable for all who visit the bar, hosts will accommodate only the number of seats available at the time. I cannot recommend the ANDAZ CELLAR BAR ENOUGH!

A PLUS: The empanadas ROCK (but gives  you garlic breath for days and WELL WORTH IT, might add).

A MINUS: Your drinks (water and wine) come in what I can only describe as a shot glass. One swig of a beverage and your drink is gone. Staff, however, is excellent at re-filling (if you don’t beat them to it).

The bar in the cellar is open daily from 5 pm until late.  For more information, check out www.andaz5thavenue.com or call 212.601.1234.
