The Greeks in Chi-Town…

27 Apr

By Christabelle the Greek…

For wine-lovers, escaping to Greece is now as easy as a trip to Chicago and Avli Estiatorio.  The contemporary Greek restaurant features the most extensive Greek wine list of any restaurant in the Midwest.  Avli lets you tour all the regions of Greece with an impressive list of over 115 authentic Greek wines. With bottles ranging from $20 to $100, everyone has a chance to accent their meal with a savory wine. A more expensive specialty reserve wine list is also available upon request for wine connoisseurs and those who are looking to further enhance their dining experience. This list boasts wines from my dad’s island of Samos (as in where he grew up – not as in my own private island…)

“We carry a number of wines that you won’t be able to find anywhere else in America,” says owner, Loui Alexakis.  “In addition to the roditis and retsinas that most people think of when it comes to Greek wine, our wine list features bottles from Paros, Cephalonia, Santorini and more.” Starting in May, Monday’s will feature wine flights for $10 with either 3 half glasses of white wines from the island of Santorini or 3 half glasses of red wines from the Nemea region.

The North Shore restaurant is the only Greek restaurant in the state of Illinois to be honored with a Wine Spectator Award of Excellence.  This prestigious national award recognizes restaurants whose wine lists appeal to a wide range of wine lovers, offer interesting selections and are appropriate to their cuisine.

Heading to Chicago? Stop by Avli Estiatorio and tell them Christabelle says “Yiasou!”

About Avli Estiatorio

Located in Winnetka on Chicago’s beautiful North Shore, Avli Estiatorio prides itself on serving both authentic and innovative Greek cuisine in a fresh, relaxing atmosphere. The beautifully secluded outdoor patio space lends itself perfectly to enjoying a glass or two of vino – Avli’s extensive Greek-only wine list received a 2010 Wine Spectator Award of Excellence – paired with their incredible Mediterranean menu options. Avli was named one of the Best New Restaurants in 2009 by Northshore Magazine and has received a 4.5 star review from Make it Better Magazine. Whether it’s a large family gathering or a quiet dinner for two, a meal at Avli Estiatorio is as close to Greece in Chicago as you’ll get without a plane ticket. Avli is located at 566 Chestnut in Winnetka, Illinois, and can be reached at 847.446.9300 or online at http://www.avli.us.

NYC Fitness Trainer’s Top 5 Tips to De-Stress at Your Desk…

25 Apr

By Christabelle…

The three o’clock slump might have you reaching for a cup of coffee or sugary snack in order to re-focus. According to New York City Fitness Professional Jon Gallo, “desk workers should take short stretch breaks at least once an hour. Taking frequent, shorter breaks that allow you regularly relax and stretch is more effective than taking a few longer breaks.” Jon also notes that if the majority of your time is spent typing on a computer, you should aim to take a five minute break every 30 minutes spent on the computer.

Have You Taken a Stretch Break Today? Jon encourages employers to post these five reminders in strategic spots around the workplace to motivate employees to “take a break”:

  1. Neck and Shoulder Stretches
    • Roll your chair away from your desk. Starting with your head facing forward, using your hand, gently stretch your head and neck to the left and right
    • Practice this simple de-stressing technique: take a deep breath and shrug your shoulders as high as you can, and gently lower them, while breathing out deeply
  2. Hand and Forearm Stretches
    • Continuous typing can lead to stress injuries such as carpal tunnel syndrome. Help reduce the chances of an injury by giving your hands and fingers a break.
    • Roll back from your desk and allow your hands to fall at your sides. Roll your wrists in a clockwise and counter-clockwise direction. Shake them out to reliever any tension
    • Stretch your forearms by flexing your palms towards your arms, gently increasing the stretch with your other hand. Then extend your palm away from your arm, using your other hand to stretch the top of your hand towards your forearm. You should feel a stretch throughout the underside of your arm
  3. Back Stretches
    • Sitting for long periods at a time is unnatural and can create pressure, especially in the lower back region. Jon recommends standing and walking as often as possible
    • When standing, do a simple back stretch by bending at the waist and letting your arms lower towards the ground. Try to release all tension in your back and slowly “roll up,” one vertebrae at a time
    • If you don’t have a back injury, work on improving your range of motion by doing gentle torso twists, rotating your trunk several times to help “loosen up.”
  4. Leg Stretches
    • Sitting for long periods of time also cause blood to pool in your lower legs. Jon says getting moving, even walking around the block, can help improve circulation and “wake up” tired legs
    • Simple leg stretches such as calf raises, quad stretches and hamstring stretches can all be done in the comfort of your cubicle
    • If you feel yourself getting drowsy at your desk, a neat trick you can try is leg lifts: from a sitting position, raise your foot 3-4 inches off the ground and hold it. You will start to feel a burn – keep going until your muscle gives out, repeat on the other side
  5. Stop & Smell the Roses! (General Relaxation)
    • Everyone needs a moment to “get away” from it all. Allow yourself to sit quietly in a break room or outdoors and let your mind wander
    • Music can be soothing and help relieve stress during tense situations. Find your favorite song and let yourself smile – you’ll be surprised how much stress can be relieved simply by smiling or laughing!

Get your caffeine fix ON in NYC…

13 Apr

By Christabelle…

Krups USA announced today the winners of the “KRUPS Cup O’ Joe Awards.” Discovering the locals’ favorite coffee shops in each of NYC’s five boroughs and beyond, Krups USA polled 250 coffee-toting New Yorkers on the streets of each borough to discover their picks for the city’s best sips. Additionally, Krups surveyed coffee fans in the biggest cities across the country, discovering local favorites from Boston to Chicago to Miami to Los Angeles.

“New York is a coffee-lovers paradise, but with every other bodega boasting the ‘Best Coffee in NYC,’ caffeine-craving visitors and locals alike could be missing out on the best brews right inside their borough!” said Meagan Bradley, Marketing Director at KRUPS. “We’re so thrilled to have unearthed some lesser known local establishments across the country, showing that even the little guys can brew up some big flavors.”

And the winners are…

Manhattan’s MUDTruck – This bright orange East Village landmark was the city’s first gourmet coffee truck, and has been pumping out explosively strong coffee since 2001. Their three proprietary blends are Rainforest Alliance Certified, and fans that can’t chase down the truck can stop by their brick and mortar MUDSpot at 307 East 9th Street.

Brooklyn’s Gimme! Coffee – Opened in 2003, this extension of a young coffee chain from Ithaca, NY brought the talents of Master Roaster John Gant to Brooklyn, and now features a wide variety of triple ristretto espresso shots and daily blends from beans roasted at Gimme’s upstate facility for maximum freshness. (495 Lorimer St, Williamsburg)

The Bronx’s Beans and Berries – You’ll have to bypass the big box coffee chains to get to Beans and Berries, one of the only local coffee shops in the Bronx. Here, eye-opening French press coffee is served up cheap, and has been a respite for java-deprived locals. (2038 Eastchester Rd, Bronx)

Staten Island’s Java Den – Serving up piping hot coffees and espresso drinks made by the husband and wife team, stop by for the local favorite hot White Mocha, and swap out some old reads for new ones at their “Take One Leave One” bookshelf. (3135 Victory Blvd, Staten Island)

Queens’ Sweetleaf – The only purveyor in Queens of Stumptown beans, the independent Portland roasters that “revolutionized the coffee business,” Queen’s Sweetleaf churns out robust fair-trade coffee and espresso drinks, even imprinting foamy selections with a signature leaf design. (10-93 Jackson Avenue, Long Island City, Queens)

In addition to scouring the streets of New York, KRUPS representatives polled coffee aficionados from across the country through customer mailers, street teams and social media pages, picking the top spots for your cross country caffeine fix below:

  • Los Angeles, CA – Groundwork Coffee Co. (numerous locations in Southern CA)
  • Seattle, WA – Monorail Espresso (520 Pike St)
  • Miami, FL – News Café (800 Ocean Dr.)
  • Chicago, IL – Metropolis Coffee Co. (1039 West Granville Avenue)
  • Boston – Barismo (169 Massachusetts Ave, Arlington)
  • Philadelphia – Spruce Street Espresso (1101 Spruce St)
  • Dallas – White Rock Coffee (10105 E Northwest Hwy)
  • San Francisco – Blue Bottle Coffee Co. (locations throughout SF and Oakland)
  • Atlanta – Dancing Goats Café (419 W. Ponce De Leon, Decatur)
  • Washington, D.C. – M.E. Swing Co. (1702 G Street N.W.)
  • Noteworthy National Retailer – Peet’s Coffee & Tea – Known for its strong, dark roasted coffee, Peet’s has been expanding rapidly since opening their original Berkeley, CA outpost in 1966.

Unplug, Breathe Deep, and Get Real…

12 Apr

By Christabelle…

Spring is upon us – it’s time to get off the couch and into the fresh air!  With its magnificent climate, diverse geography and family-friendly vibe, Wine Coast Country is the perfect West Coast destination for an outdoor “reboot.”  Need a little adventure, meaning, and balance to your sluggish of sedentary lifestyles…read on!

Instead of sitting in traffic…why not take the long way?

Those who enjoy revving their engines under the sun will love off-roading at the Oceano Dunes State Recreation Area – the only California state park that allows vehicles to drive on the beach.  For visitors longing to kayak in tranquility, Lopez Lake in Arroyo Grande and the protected waters off Olde Port Beach in Avila Beach are terrific destinations.  Or, if you prefer to travel more simply – on foot – the Central Coast hosts dozens of charity walks and races throughout the spring, welcoming everyone from weekend warriors to Ironman triathletes.  For a gorgeous 10K from Morro Rock to Cayucos Pier that benefits a good cause, check out the Miracle Miles for Kids event hosted by Family Care Network every May.

Instead of channel-surfing…try surfing the mighty Pacific.

Wine Coast Country hosts some of the most beloved surf spots in all of California.  Take in the sunset and swells at famous surf spot Pico Creek in San Simeon, or hang ten in classic California style at Sand Spit in Los Osos.  Your first time?  Try a surf school like Cayucos Surf Company, which offers group and private lessons for the young and the young-at-heart.  Up and down the Central Coast, everyone from the little grom to the big kahuna will find their perfect wave.  So grab your neoprene and your board – surf’s up!

Instead of word processing…why not process your thoughts?

Nothing clears the mind like a long hike.  And when it comes to good hikes, from tiny trails off the beaten path to popular walks for the whole family, nothing beats Wine Coast Country.  For a tramp over creeks, a lake, sand dunes, and an unspoiled stretch of coastline, the Guadalupe-Nipomo Dunes Center is just the thing. Or take Fido out for a stroll on the Bob Jones Bike Trail in Avila Beach.  This 1.5-mile paved path is canopied in regal sycamores and oaks, and accommodates everyone from kids on tricycles to dog-walkers.  Or, for the ultimate in secluded take-your-breath-away beauty, try Montaña de Oro State Park near Los Osos.  The park’s name, translated “Mountain of Gold,” finds its origins in the golden wildflowers that bloom every spring. Bring a picnic, work up a sweat, and then relax among the wildflowers.

Instead of eating out…try eating way out.

Wine Coast Country’s fertile soils and temperate climate nurture hundreds of acres of abundant farm land.  Many ranches welcome visitors for tours and picnics,  including avocado farms like Morro Creek Ranch outside Morro Bay, olive oil producers like Tiber Canyon Ranch in Price Canyon, and any one of the myriad world-renowned wineries across the Central Coast.  Or if you’re in the mood for seafood, stop by the Morro Bay Oyster Company or The Abalone Farm in Cayucos for a tour and a taste of the freshest shellfish around.

Instead of playing video games…try playing on the wild side.

While the Central Coast certainly attracts the attention of hundreds of thousands of people annually, it’s an even greater destination for migratory wildlife.  Beginning in April, humpback whales make their way to the coast to feed throughout the summer.  Several coastal towns host whale-watching tours, including Avila Beach, Morro Bay, and San Simeon.  Or for those with an interest in lepidopterology (the study of butterflies), a visit to the Monarch Butterfly Grove in Pismo Beach is in order, with an average of 25,000 Monarchs covering the eucalyptus forest during high season.  And better than any soap opera is San Simeon’s Elephant Seal Rookery during mating season.  Along a short stretch of windswept coastline, this free, natural entertainment includes male elephant seals fighting and bellowing for dominance, pups squawking to be fed, and females defending their young…all in the open air.

Instead of endless cell phone calls…why not hang up and thrive?

In this era of breakneck technological advancement, it feels good to power-down the cell phone and make a face-to-face connection.  And with its year-round mild weather, Wine Coast Country excels at building community out-of-doors, with at least one farmers’ market every day of the week, pedestrian-friendly bustling city centers, and plenty of al fresco entertainment.  Pick up fresh, in-season produce and shake the hand that feeds you at the Avila Beach fish and farmers’ market every Friday.  Enjoy coffee, baked delights, and conversation on the patio of one of Cambria’s sidewalk cafes on a sunny spring day.  Or just lay down a blanket at Edna Valley Vineyards, grab a bottle of fine wine and soak up the live music every Friday night in June.

When it comes to accommodations that make the most of the outdoors, Wine Coast Country has it covered, from cozy to classy.  Try an oceanfront vacation rental for the weekend or the month that allows your family to come and go as you please, spread out, and cook in your own kitchen.  Or take your beloved to the quaint Victoria’s Last Resort bed and breakfast in Cambria, which features fantastic views, complete privacy, and luxurious private gardens; or one of Cambria’s Moonstone Beach hotels fronting the boardwalk along the beach.  Of course, if luxury is your thing, you could always stay at a deluxe beachfront hotel like Avila Beach Lighthouse Suites or On The Beach Bed & Breakfast in Cayucos.  Wherever you stay, this much is certain: You will find yourself falling in love with the Wine Coast Country lifestyle.

About Wine Coast Country

Wine Coast Country represents the San Luis Obispo County Business Improvement District, whose mission is to promote increased occupancy in the 730+ lodging properties that are a part of the CBID constituency. www.WineCoastCountry.com promotes tourism to San Luis Obispo County’s distinct unincorporated areas, including Avila Beach, Cambria, Cayucos, Los Osos, Nipomo, Oceano, San Simeon, and unincorporated San Luis Obispo, Arroyo Grande, and Morro Bay.  For more information check out www.WineCoastCountry.com.

This allows enough time to grow the brows in with an expert’s objective guidance, and also gives you time to grow them back if you’re not happy with the results;

2. Keep it classic: Did you know that eyebrows are considered a feature on your face—as important as your nose and lips? You’ll want to look back at your wedding pictures and admire the classically shaped eyebrows, not apologize for showing off the latest trend (super thin, rounded, etc);

3. “Grow” Before “go!”: If you’re ready to elope, (and didn’t have six months to plan ahead), you can still see a brow expert right up until the day before your wedding! If you go to someone who is highly recommended, you’ll more likely be glad you did it. But if you’re going to wait until the last minute, to try to grow the brows in as much as possible before getting them shaped;

4. Fill ‘em up: Unless your brows are naturally bold, glam-up you look by filling-in your brows on your wedding day. Choose a brow filler that is one or two shades lighter than your brow hair color. If in doubt, choose a universally flattering color such as Ramy’s own Perfect Brow Wand $28 (in taupe). Filling-in your brows on the big day will make your eyes look bigger and will give you a much more finished and polished look; and

5. Groom the Groom! Hate the unibrow? Many men need to have their brows groomed before their wedding day. You want the groom to look, well…groomed, but not obviously done— Ramy‘s technique is called Guybrows to keep it subtle and natural looking, and the groom will look great!

TIPS: How to keep your home safe when you travel

9 Apr

By Christabelle

Every 15 seconds, a burglary takes place in homes and businesses across the United States. Scary thought right? In addition to protecting your home and/or business with an Archerfish Video Monitoring System – an award-winning thinking video surveillance system that understands what it sees. Just tell it what to look for – expected events, unanticipated intrusions, or just the odd things that can happen when you’re not around – and Archerfish sends video alerts to any number of mobile phone or email addresses when they happen.

And as we head into the summer travel season, the makers of the Archerfish Solo intelligent video surveillance system have developed several tips to provide property owners additional peace of mind while away from home:

  • Watch what you post on Facebook:  Sure you want to share all the fabulous fun you’re having.  But first, check your privacy settings and be sure you’re comfortable about the information you’re sharing about your time away from home.  If you’re posting photos, remove the location data so the bad guys can’t easily figure out that you’re really far from home.
  • Don’t leave mail / newspapers unattended while you’re away.  Thieves will notice that you’re not home, making your house an easy target. Instead, have the post office hold all mail until you return home. Also make sure to put your newspaper delivery on hold. A large pile of newspapers outside your front door is a sure sign that the house is unoccupied. Alternatively, have a neighbor pick up your mail and newspapers.
  • Be discrete with the details:  Businesses often hire summer help and you never know how much information is shared; so whether you’re pausing the newspaper or giving the dog walker, yard guy, cleaning crew a break, share the details of your trip only on a ‘need to know basis’.
  • Hide the spare key. Though many of us hide a spare key under a mat or large flower pot, that’s probably the first place a criminal might search. Retrieve the key and leave it with a family friend or trusted neighbor.
  • Use a timer to keep the lights on. Instead of turning everything off, use a timer to keep one or two lights on during evening hours. You can even use them to turn on a radio or television. This will make it difficult for the burglar to determine if you’re home.
  • Double-check the locks on your windows and doors: So many homeowners simply forget about an open window or basement door, making it really easy for the bad guys.  Before you leave, take a few minutes and walk the house to make sure everything is locked up.

Cocktail of the Week: Its just EFFEN good…

8 Apr

By Christabelle…

I try to be lady like as often as I can…keeping the truck driver, potty mouth for my  road rage infused trips out to the Hamptons on the L.I.E (if you have ever done this…you know exactly what I am talking about). But I had to drop an “F” bomb with this one…because it was just THAT EFFEN GOOD (yes, folks,  that is a play on words).

EFFEN® Cucumber Vodka

EFFEN Vodka is a super-premium vodka whose name means smooth, even and balanced in Dutch.  It is made from a modified, century-old Dutch recipe featuring premium wheat.  Most vodkas are produced from grapes, potatoes or corn, however it’s the wheat used to make EFFEN which creates it’s smooth taste on the palette.

Makes these super-licious cocktails, and sip generously at sunset with a hottie by your side.

EFFEN® Cucumber Coconut Palm
1½ parts EFFEN® Cucumber Vodka
1½ parts Coconut Water
1 Small Kiwi or Half of a Large Kiwi, peeled
¾ parts Lemon Juice
¾ parts Simple Syrup

Method: Combine ingredients, squeezing or muddling the kiwi, into a cocktail shaker. Add ice and shake. Strain and pour into a tall glass with ice.

EFFEN® Cucumber Basil Temptress
1 ½ parts EFFEN® Cucumber Vodka
¾ parts simple syrup
3 leaves of Basil
1 ½ parts club soda

Method: Combine all ingredients, except club soda, to a cocktail shaker with ice. Strain it into a tall glass with ice. Add club soda and garnish with cucumber and basil leaf.

Costa Rican Hotel Shows Jungle Love…

7 Apr

By Christabelle…

Lace up those sneakers and head down to Costa Rica for the third-annual Lapathon Jungle Run, a fundraising event that supports the needs of local schools in the Osa Peninsula.

As a project of the highly-sustainable Lapa Rios Rainforest Ecolodge, this year’s 18-km run is limited to 300 participants and will take place on May 1, 2011 in Costa Rica’s Osa Peninsula. Cost to register is $20, with all funds raised going to fulfill infrastructure needs of local schools. Winners (first to finish and most pledges earned) will receive free nights and meals at one of the six Earth-friendly Cayuga Sustainable Hospitality resorts in Costa Rica and Nicaragua.

“This is the third time we’ve held this wildly-successful event,” said Hans Pfister, CEO and principle of Cayuga Sustainable Hospitality. “In 2009, funds raised went towards equipping the region’s only ambulance with supplies and, in 2010, we helped to build a classroom for children with learning disabilities. All our resorts participate in programs like the Lapathon to help our environment, community and people – we like to think we’re doing our bit to make our corner of the Earth just a little better.”

Created in the ’90s under the philosophy that “a rainforest left standing was worth more than cut down,” Lapa Rios is set on a private nature reserve, spread over 1,000-acres of Central America’s last remaining lowland tropical rainforest. Over the years, Lapa Rios has been recognized for its Earth-saving ways by Condé Nast Traveler, Travel + Leisure, TripAdvisor, National Geographic and many more.

To sign up for the third-annual Lapathon Jungle Run, visit http://www.laparios.com/lapathon

Another major May initiative for Lapa Rios is the 2011 Wildcat Research and Conservation Experience – a package that allows guests the opportunity to get involved with jaguar, puma and wildcat conservation efforts. The experience is available year-round (based on researcher availability) and, during the low season (May 1 – Oct. 31, 2011), starts at $270 USD per person per night (based on double occupancy) to $370 USD per person per night (based on single occupancy). Package highlights include:

  • Setting up and checking heat sensor triggered cameras in the Lapa Rios wildlife reserve, cameras used to monitor the movement of jaguar, puma and other wildlife in the reserve and the Osa Peninsula.
  • Hiking into the rainforest and helping to collect wildcat footprints in the rainforest.
  • Learning how to conduct an analysis of the wild cats’ diets in the rainforest.
  • Working alongside locals – some used to be hunters but are not actively involved in the conservation of the wildlife, flora and fauna of the Osa Peninsula.
  • Participating in talks given at local schools, community groups and hotels about the wildlife conservation program.
  • Setting up and testing a program that monitors the movement of peccaries (medium sized, wild pig-like mammals) with the help of GPS collars.

Special rates and promotions at Lapa Rios:

April 25 – Aug. 25, 2011: buy a Lapa Rios or family package and get an additional night for free; buy five nights and pay for only four.

June 15 – Sept. 15, 2011: kids stay and eat free.

Aug. 26 – Nov. 20, 2011: buy three nights and pay for only two.

Bigger is Better…

6 Apr

By Christabelle…

When I was a little girl, my best friend Amy and I would play make-over (like most little girls). I was convinced, at age 6, that I would work at the beauty counter one day – most specifically, the Clinique counter (thanks to Amy’s mom who let us play with her free GWP’s!). Well, I never made it to the beauty counter (except of course to spend exorbitant amounts of money). But I did make it into the world of Beauty PR and now the world of Beauty Blogging. And Clinique is STILL one of my favorites (not to mention the smell of Clinique Aromatics will forever remind me of my mother, who has bathed in the fragrance since as far back as I can remember).

And yes, Bigger IS Better – especially when we are talking about my skin care products (get your mind out of the gutter).  To my delight, Clinique just launched larger 1.7 oz size of Even Better Clinical Dark Spot Corrector.  Did you know one of these products is sold every 9.8 seconds (and I swear it isn’t me buying them all!). With the power to even skin-tone with results equal to that of a leading prescription – the disappearing act at counter is no surprise. Clinical tests showed a 53% improvement in skin tone after just 12 weeks of use. I’ve seen improvement after just a few short weeks…

But don’t take my word for it (well, yeah you should). Go run out and get yourself a bottle and put the claims to the test. You will be pleasantly surprised. While you are there, also grab a bottle of Cliniques Pore Refining Solutions Correcting Serum- it reduces the visible appearance of pores by 58% in just 2 weeks – seriously.  And if you get a free gift with purchase while at the Clinique counter – pass it along to a little girl with big, beautiful dreams…she might just be a Christabelle in the making!

Not Your Ordinary Spring Cleaning…Clean Up Your Mouth

3 Apr

By Christabelle…

Spring is here – so get your smooch on…but make sure your minty fresh!

Spring is here and many households across America are undergoing spring cleaning, which typically means kitchens and bathrooms will be rid of old items and grime and packed closets will be purged and tidied.  But how about taking spring cleaning a step further this year by starting a more thorough cleaning routine on one of the most important places to clean – your mouth?

Maintaining a healthy mouth may help keep your body healthy.  Emerging science suggests that advanced gum disease may be linked to diabetes, cardiovascular problems, and pre-term birth.  Brushing and flossing your teeth cleans only 25 percent of your mouth, leaving millions of germs behind.  Adding a mouthwash, like LISTERINE® to your daily routine can kill those germs, help prevent and reduce plaque and gingivitis germs and – of course – fight bad breath.

My personal favorite is Listerine Total Care Plus Whitening – what more could one ask for from a mouthwash? This power wash has so many benefits, I cannot fit them all onto this post, but here are a few noteworthy ones:

  • Noticeably whitens teeth
  • Helps Prevent Cavities
  • Restores Enamel
  • Strengthens Teeth
  • Kills Bad Breath Germs
  • Freshens Breath
  • Cleans the Whole Mouth

Now I feel like I can eat as much Tzatziki as I want and still be able to have a minty make-out! Thanks Listerine…now if you could just teach me how to gargle, we would be all set (yes, folks, Christabelle  is gargle deficient…go figure!)
